A disability that keeps you out of work could have a devastating affect on your income, jeopardizing your ability to cover normal household expenses. UH provides short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) coverage to most full-time employees and UHMG physicians with an FTE status of .20 or higher.

Short-Term Disability

Short-term disability (STD) coverage is a supplement to the UH Time Off (PTO or Vacation) programs and is intended to replace a portion of your earnings if you experience a non-occupational illness or injury that prevents you from performing the material duties of your job.

STD generally provides a benefit of 60% of your weekly earnings, up to $2,500, and benefits are payable for up to 25 weeks of disability.

Long-Term Disability

Long-term disability (LTD) insurance coverage is intended to replace a portion of your monthly earnings if you are totally disabled for an extended period of time and are unable to work.

LTD generally provides a benefit of 60% of your monthly earnings, up to $2,500, and benefits are generally payable up to age 65 if you remain disabled under the terms of the plan. If your annual salary is greater than $50,000, you can choose to purchase voluntary LTD coverage during benefits open enrollment or within 30 days of hire. Voluntary LTD coverage replaces 60% of your monthly income up to $15,000 per month. If you earn over $50,000, you can purchase voluntary long-term disability insurance to protect the portion of your salary that is over $50,000.
